Dermody issues executive order, effective Sunday, to help curtail second virus wave

Mayor Tom Dermody

La Porte Mayor Tom Dermody Friday issued an executive order requiring that all customers and employees wear face coverings in retail buildings to help limit the spread of COVID-19.

The executive order will take effect at 12:01 a.m. Sunday, July 12, and will run through Friday, Aug. 7.

“Our community has seen comparatively low numbers throughout this pandemic, but it is far from over,” Dermody said. “Our numbers are beginning to run as the anticipated second wave approaches, and we want to be prepared. The last thing we need is for the economy to shut down again, so we are being proactive in hopes that this measure will help prevent the spread of the virus and minimize the impact of the second peak in La Porte.”

Under the executive order, customers and employees will be required to wear a mask or face covering in enclosed businesses unless they have a medical exemption. In spaces where a face covering would prevent the delivery of goods or services, such as a restaurant, face coverings will not be required as long as social distancing of at least six feet is maintained. In addition, retailers will also be required to provide hand sanitizer at entrances and near high-touch surfaces.

Dermody said Director of Code Enforcement Jeff Batchelor is prepared to enforce this order.

“Our numbers are rising throughout the country and this is not something we are going to take lightly,” Batchelor said. “My team and I will be going around the city to ensure this executive order is being followed. We don’t want to ticket people, but we will if that’s what it takes to keep our community safe.”

I don’t know what prompted the mayor to do this now, but it seems like a mute point. This order should’ve came out in March, April, or May. Reusable masks spread the disease a lot faster than people not wearing them. They take the mask off, and don’t clean it. They touch the mask when they’re in a store and could spreading the virus everywhere. Personally I feel a lot better not having a mask on unless you’re actually sick.

If we’d just follow science on this issue we could defeat it. Misinformation and clueless opinion from the president and his yes men will continue to keep us spinning our wheels.

This article was written in February. More recent studies show while won’t completely protect you, if everyone wears them, it does slow the spread.

Thank you, Mayor, for doing this! Going to the store for necessary groceries has been scary the past few weeks. No one, it seems, is wearing a mask, except the employees.

Referring to the comment about proper masks, you are correct. The inexpensive N95 and doctor’s office masks provide 95% protection against viruses, while bandannas and washable fabric provide almost no protection, according to supplier websites.

This should not be a Red/Blue, Republica/Democrat issue people, it is live or die, do You want to do complete battle with and defeat this virus now?? Or do You want to keep doing a half hearted job with this enemy and spend the next ten years floundering and being sick?? Thus collapsing our Medical System and losing tens of thousands of our loved ones to the virus. Trump said he was “Warrior President ” in regards to this virus, he actually in fact did very, very little correctly and gonna suffer a good bit for it. This virus should have been knocked out already???

Yes Trump is awesome he is ruining our country with his underhanded selfish ways. Destroyed every diplomatic relationship and peace and respect if other countries. Pardoning all his guilty partners in crime. Emma must have rise colored glasses on. It’s funny how regular folk relate to a man that has never mowed a lawn or walked a bag of garbage to the curb. I wonder how his nannies taught him to wipe his own butt, that must of been a task.

It isn’t worth it wear a mask now and stay safe. Getting the covid-19 is no fun, you will feel like you are dying and that’s just the mild symptoms.

Cloth face coverings are recommended as a simple barrier to help prevent respiratory droplets from traveling into the air and onto other people when the person wearing the cloth face covering coughs, sneezes, talks, or raises their voice. This is called source control. This recommendation is based on what we know about the role respiratory droplets play in the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19, paired with emerging evidence from clinical and laboratory studies that shows cloth face coverings reduce the spray of droplets when worn over the nose and mouth. COVID-19 spreads mainly among people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet), so the use of cloth face coverings is particularly important in settings where people are close to each other or where social distancing is difficult to maintain.

Here is what the CDC said……..arly in the COVID-19 pandemic, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other government officials discouraged Americans from wearing masks, saying they were unlikely to help stop the spread of the virus, according to the best evidence at the time.

But as evidence accumulated, the CDC made an abrupt about-face on April 3, encouraging all Americans to don face coverings to slow transmission of the virus, which was largely believed to be spread through respiratory droplets.

Meanwhile, across the world, scientists were frantically marshaling resources to set up a wide range of studies to examine the issue. Some set up dummies in their laboratories, mimicking coughing or sneezing using spray canisters and capturing the distance these droplets were able to fly.

GREAT PLAN, hope it will be enforced. It’s better to wear a mask now than wear one forever. Please people follow Mr Dermody’s order and do your part so we can sooner rather than later get back to normal.

Herd immunity, your going to get alot more cases of the China virus the death rate is below pandemic stages . Half of all deaths are from Governors sticking positive elderly back into old folks home a.k.a Governor in New York. Plus they attribute cases that dont have to do nothing with the virus. People dont realize the flu kills 3,000 people to 10000 people a month i bet the virus is apart of those numbers too.. yes, theirs some science and facts . Who knows how long this will go on ? what agenda? .Heck next thing you may have to wear a mask as soon as you step outside. Guess what they already trying it !!

So many incorrect statements here. First of all N-95 masks have a diaphragm that lets the users breath out and only actually filters incoming air. They are designed to protect the user not anyone around them. Trump has done a phenomenal job considering how this virus came to be most likely in a lab. Trump relies SOLELY on the CDC’s guidance. As did every prior president has. Turn off the news and read a book.

Smokers are proven to spread the virus further and leave it hanging longer in the air. So wearing a mask I believe is primarily protested by people with the other selfish act of smoking without regard in how sick they are making others. Could it be that the strongest opinions are those non wearing mask protestors with their nasty and gross chain smoking? Let COVID-19 allow you the experience of choosing a healthier life for yourself and those around you. Go get them Joe, you are dead on!!

I hasten to reassure Debra that I am not a smoker, thank goodness. It is unfair of you to assume that those of us who do not want to wear a mask are smokers. We are just tired of seeing our freedoms being slowly taken away from us one by one. Why does no one protest that?

Your freedoms will be more restricted if we move to total home lock down with the national guard patrolling us if this is not contained Dear John. Smoker or not, your refusal to wear a mask is a simple courtesy to not spread your germs to others. I don’t believe that represents an assault to your freedom. People in India, more than seventy percent of the population have no running water or indoor toilets. They wait in line for hours to use a public outhouse. How about their freedoms. We are all privileged in America. Where is the caring for others?

2 things amaze me. 1 The number of people with master degrees in the Medical Field that are taking time to comment on here. 2. The lack of protesters of No Shirt No Shoes No Service Seat Belt laws, No Smoking laws, , Speed Limits, and the list goes on and on. They are put in place to help protect you and the general public. If it is so against your rights to wear a mask take off that shirt, shoes, seat belt. If wearing a mask for a few minutes while shopping is so hard, it may explain why you don’t have that Medical Degree because the person saving your life from not doing some of the things I mentioned above wears one for most if not all of their 8-12 hour shift.

What all you fanatical mask proponents are failing to realize or understand is the completely false protection that is offered by wearing one. If you were to place that mask under a powerful microscope, it would magnify the fabric weave high enough for you to see that the mask is full of holes which any microscopic virus can easily find its way through. Additionally, the virus can find its way in not only through the mouth and nose but also through the eyes. I don’t see any of you mask wearers covering up your eyes. Come on, people, use some logical sense here and stop being ruled by abject fear and mindless panic.

The virus is now permanently in the environment. Making everyone wear a mask only serves to make people feel like they’re safe. You’re not. This is a horrible virus that kills–no doubt. Arguing about politics won’t change that fact. Wearing a mask won’t protect you. There were plenty of doctors and nurses who wore better protective gear than most of us can purchase, but these brave souls still got the virus and suffered greatly. Many even died. It’s here for the duration and there’s is nothing we can do about it except hope for a vaccine. But even then, a vaccine will become political. What if someone says they won’t take the vaccine? Will we hold them down and force them? Will they be arrested? Will the mayor pass a resolution that states all LaPorteans must take the vaccine? Whatever your political leanings, beware the slippery slope into Socialism.
