City seeks input on program spending

La Porte will be applying for nearly half of a million dollars in federal Community Development Block Grants (CDBG) and wants your input on ways to spend it.

Two public meetings, one set for 1:15 p.m. Thursday, July 23 and the other for 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6, will allow residents, agencies and community groups to offer input as the city develops the  2020 Annual Action Plan. Federal law requires a municipality to submit an action plan that shows its strategy and goals for use of a CDBG grant.

Eligible CDBG activities include, among other things, single-family rehabilitation, homeownership programs, demolition, and public service activities.

“Two different dates were chosen out of consideration for residents of LaPorte and community members who are unable to attend one. Both of these meetings will be telecast on Facebook Live-City of La Porte’s Facebook page and the City’s YouTube page to receive citizen’s comments,” said Mary Ann Richards of La Porte’s Office of Community Development and Planning.

The city intends to apply for $468,863 in CDBG funds for program year 2020 to the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The deadline is August 15, 2020. If awarded the grant money, the city anticipates carrying out the housing and community development activities in 2020-2021.

Richards said that if anyone is unable to attend either public meeting, written comments will be accepted through Aug. 14 at the following address:
