A 27-year-old La Porte man, Zackery A. Padgett, was arrested for being a serious violent felon in possession of a firearm, a level 4 felony.

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office said that shortly before 11 a.m. Friday Deputy Jon Samuelson was traveling westbound on U.S. 20 near the 3000 east block and began to pace a passenger vehicle traveling ahead of him that appeared to be exceeding the posted speed limit. As Samuelson got directly behind the vehicle, the vehicle abruptly braked and turned north onto CR-300 East. After completing the turn, the driver failed to signal his intention of turning within the distance required by law.

Samuelson initiated a traffic stop for the moving violation in the 4500 north block of CR-300 East. The driver was identified as Padgett. It was during this time that Ryan Elcock, commercial vehicle enforcement deputy, arrived to assist. Police discovered a loaded Smith and Wesson handgun magazine in the passenger compartment. Shortly after, a Smith and Wesson 9mm handgun and another loaded magazine were located in another area of the vehicle.

Padgett was arrested and transported to the La Porte County Jail, where he was booked for the offense of possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon, a level 4 felony. He is being held on a $20,005.00 cash-only bond through Superior Court I.

Arrests and criminal charges are mere accusations. Every person is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
