Sheriff’s Office hires new deputy, transfers another deputy to merit division

Deputy Micah Hatley

Micah C. Hatley has joined the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office as a new deputy and Deputy Benjamin G. Pointon has been transferred from the LCSO jail division to the merit (patrol) division.

Hatley, 23, began her employment with LCSO on July 7, 2020. She was born in Merrillville, Ind. and currently resides in rural Cass Township. Following graduation from South Central High School in 2015, she attended Purdue University Northwest (PNW). She graduated from PNW in 2019, earning a bachelor’s degree while majoring in psychology. Hatley graduated from the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy (NILEA) on June 4, 2020. She was a member of Basic Recruit Class 20-43 and served as the “B” squad leader for her fellow classmates.

Deputy Benjamin Pointon

Pointon, 32, will be transferred to the merit division from the jail division, effective July 27, 2020. He was born in La Porte, where he still resides with his wife and two children. Pointon graduated from La Porte High School in 2006 and then attended Purdue University North Central (PNC), graduating in 2011 with a bachelor’s degree while majoring in accounting. On May 30, 2018, Pointon began his employment with the LCSO as a jail deputy. He will attend an upcoming 15-week session at NILEA.

The hiring of Hatley and the transfer of Pointon fills the two remaining vacancies within the merit (patrol) division, Sheriff Boyd said.

“We are ecstatic about the recent hire and division transfer,” the sheriff said. “Deputy Hatley has already begun field training and we are looking forward to her being released for solo patrol duties in the coming months. We wish Deputy Pointon the best of luck during his upcoming academy session.”
