LCSO musician spotlight: Kathryn Brtko

Our local symphony orchestra can boast of yet another musician who has been committed to making music for the region for decades.

The principal oboe player in the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra, Kathryn Brtko, will be entering her 27th season with the LCSO.

Like her fellow Scorpion, composer Alexander Borodin, Kathryn says she was smitten with both music and science at an early age. She received her B.S. degree in chemistry with honors from Purdue University and is a chemist with BP Refinery in Whiting, Ind.

In addition to her “day job” with BP and the LCSO, Kathryn also performs with the Southwest Symphony in Chicago, the Whiting Park Festival Orchestra, and the Windiana Concert Band, based in northwest Indiana. She is also very active as a church musician.
