A great way to celebrate Labor Day weekend: live music at Fox Park


La Portean Chuck Steck will be performing Sunday with The North American Brass Company.


The La Porte City Band is proud to present in concert The North American Brass Company at 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6 at the Dennis F. Smith Amphitheater in Fox Park. A variety of music — from classical to jazz to pop — will be featured.

Heidi Ferris, soprano, will be guest vocalist.

Featured brass performers include Charles Steck of LaPorte and Jay Crouch of Niles, Mich., trumpets; Katy Hosey of Stevensville, Mich., horn; Gary Cooper of Benton Harbor, Mich., trombone; and Roger Lewis of Sturgis, Mich., tuba.

The North American Brass Company is one of the premier brass quintets in the Michiana region. The group is made up of performers/educators who play music of all types for all kinds of event.s These musicians have traveled extensively throughout the Midwest, performing at such venues as the Wellfield Botanical Gardens in Elkhart; The Box Factory in St. Joseph, Mich.; the Community Concert series in Portage, Ind. and in La Porte; the Dogwood Festival  Dowagiac, Mich. and the Old Rugged Cross Church in Pokagon, Mich.

The group has also performed with the famous Synergy Brass Quintet at the Culver Academies and was a featured performance with the historic La Porte City Band. The group has also performed many concerts and master classes, not only at the high school level but at the college level, as well, including Andrews University, Southwestern Michigan College, Valparaiso University and Trine University.

The North American Brass Company has  helped raise thousands of dollars by participating in community projects, including the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program of Cass County, Mich.; it was also instrumental in raising funds for the Heroin Awareness Project of La Porte.

    La Porte is truly blessed to have such a talented and giving musician in Chuck Steck. He truly epitomizes all that is great about La Porte and its history of producing great music and even greater musicians.
