A few idle thoughts from Kellems

Column and photos by WNLP’s Mike Kellems
Isn’t it great we have free COVID-19 testing, open to anyone? Thank you Beth for sharing your experience!
Anyone else think the colors provided courtesy of Mother Nature are a little richer? Seriously, look at the green in the trees, white clouds doting the blue sky and the wildflowers along side the road… pretty awesome!
Anyone else notice a larger amount of trash being dumped alongside the road? Shame on the litterbugs!
Anyone else having trouble finding a can of Lysol in the store? I’m almost out and have looked for months without success.
Notice the lines at fast-food restaurant drive thru? Will we ever be able to repay the dedicated employees who work tirelessly for minimum wage?
Speaking of fats food, are you as excited as I am for the Chick- fil-A to open in Valpo?
Just noticed I spelled “fast” wrong in the previous line… wonder if that was a Freudian slip?
Saw an article sharing news from the Department of Transportation. They awarded $13 million to the airport in South Bend. The money is to be used to improve a taxiway. Would it be better if they used the money to make at least two green traffic signals in a row?
Speaking of traffic, Potato Creek is a camp ground. If you want to camp, go to Potato Creek and get out of the left lane!
A few weeks back I counted 32 people in church and 47 people lined up at local store for filet at $4.99/pound. Not judging, just making an interesting observation.
Have you tried the honey dew melon this year? Speaking from personal experience, it is life changing!
I’m told Honey Crisp apples are just around the corner… literally for me as I live a stones throw from Garwood’s Orchard! Yippee!!
Are you as thankful as I am that high school sports are in full swing? Join me in praying that the student athletes stay healthy and keep playing.
Speaking of sports, given the way “professional” sports has become a polarizing, political sub-culture, I’m pretty much done with them.
Absolutely love the improvements made to our roads. Absolutely dread the detours and lane closures.
Anyone else give up on trying to keep squirrels and chipmunks off of your bird feeders?
Are you as tired as I am of hearing “this is the new normal”? I’m ready to put 2020 in the rearview mirror. How about you?
     Have great weekend!

Interesting and enjoyable observations. I agree Mother Nature is blessing us with vibrant colors this year. When I think of professional athletes taking political stances I can’t help but be reminded of the words spoken by Bobby Kennedy so many years ago yet I believe hold relevance in today’s world: “ Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”

Mike, I once had a deer, a raccoon and a squirrel at the feeder at the same time. I swear the birds were cussing in the trees!

Chick-fil-A opening in Valpo. What about the one to open in La Porte!
It will be next to the Verizon store in the front yard of Walmart? Yea, it may take a while as the old fire department has to be torn down first,

My husband continues to fight the squirrels at the bird feeders. He won’t give up!
