Horizon Bank donates $10,000 to Boys & Girls Clubs

As the COVID-19 crisis continues, Boys & Girls Clubs of La Porte County will be able to continue honoring its commitment to serving kids and families, thanks to the group’s ability to adapt — and a recent $10,000 donation from Horizon Bank, according to Michelle Shirk, BGCLPC chief executive officer.

“Since March, we have been adapting our programming as needed to ensure safety and meet new needs,” Shirk said. “However, modifications like extended Club hours, decreased staff/Club member ratios and enhanced sanitization protocols bring increased costs. This generous gift from Horizon Bank will help ensure our continued ability to offer critical services to our community’s youth.”

Through a partnership with Michigan City Area Schools, BGCLPC is currently operating special daytime Clubs at Pine and Springfield Elementary Schools, in addition to its Charles R. Westcott Club at 321 Detroit Street, Michigan City. Club members in grades K-8 enjoy online learning support, fun activities and healthy meals.

There is no charge to attend this program, and demand has been high, Shirk said. BGCLPC currently has a waiting list of more than 100 children, and is actively working to safely add capacity at all three Clubs.

“Horizon is proud to sponsor such a worthy organization and we knew that supporting the Boys and Girls Club during these challenging times was imperative to help them continue to provide online learning assistance, support for our local school programs, food and youth programs and services. They are doing an excellent job navigating the pandemic and safely taking care of families and children in LaPorte County,” said Horizon Chairman and CEO Craig Dwight.

So far, program participants have managed to balance virtual learning, Club activities and BGCLPC safety procedures with relative ease. “Our Club members are smart, resilient and have great futures ahead of them,” says Shirk. “We are delighted to have them learning, getting active and making new friends at our Clubs again.

Boys & Girls Clubs of La Porte County is a member of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, which is a nationwide affiliation of 4,100 autonomous Club organizations that work to help people of all backgrounds develop the qualities they need to become responsible citizens and leaders.
