NPHS sports briefs reports the following New Prairie High School news:

Girls varsity cross country

The Lady Cougars won the Cougar Kickoff Classic Tuesday with 31 points. Lillian Zelasko won the race individually by nearly 2 and a half minutes, clocking in at 19:12. The rest of the scoring 5 included Holly Wykoff in 3rd, Ilayna Baltes in 8th, Audrey Henning in 9th, and Brianna Hooton in 13th.

Girls varsity soccer

Lady Cougars fell to the Jimmies 5-2 Tuesday. With 4 goals scored early in the first half, cougars were able to score two for themselves in the second half. Both goals were scored by left-footed Catelyn Narragon. A strong outside back, Izzy Nelson shut down the right side of the field throughout the second half. Nelson and Humburger were able to dominate the right half of the field to move the ball up for a goal by Narragon. Erin Johnson started up top for the Cougars, and showed determination in the multiple runs she made to make space for shots. Cougars are rapidly improving and will travel to Mishawaka on Thursday for their next game.

Boys varsity cross country

The New Prairie Boys Cross Country team won the Cougar Kickoff Classic hosted at New Prairie Tuesday. The team placed first among a field of 10 schools and 73 athletes in the 5 kilometer race.

Rain overnight and earlier in the day made conditions difficult and slick, especially in the already tough ‘Snake’ and ‘Agony Hill’ portions of the course. Josh Baltes led the way for the Cougars, finishing second in 17:31. Brenden Oden and Tristan Balmer stuck together to finish 3-4 in 18:11 and 18:12, respectively. Dan Reshan and Dan O’Laughlin finished 5-6 to round out the scoring for the squad. Other varsity finishers included Kyle Newcomb in 8th place and Alex Cicero in 13th. The Cougars will compete next at The New Prairie Invite, scheduled for Saturday, September 19th.

Girls varsity volleyball

New Prairie varsity won a home match against South Bend Adams 3-0 Tuesday. Elise Swistek lead all hitters with 18 kills followed by Ellie Michiaels with 9. Michiaels also added 2 aces and 3 blocks in the contest. Emma Fleck dished out 36 assists while Josie Troy added 15 digs. The Cougars see action on Thursday vs South Bend Clay.
