LA PORTE HIGH SCHOOL

 

LPHS Athletic Director Ed Gilliland Saturday reported the following:

Girls volleyball 

The schedule for the volleyball regional hosted by La Porte High School this Saturday is as follows:

9 a.m.: Munster vs La Porte
12 p.m.: Penn vs Crown Point
6:30 p.m.: championship
Only session tickets will be available for purchase at $7 each.  The gym will be cleared after session 1.  Fans are asked not to arrive for the second match too early as they will be asked to leave the gym and will need to purchase another ticket for session 2.  Slicer fans may purchase tickets in advance at the LPHS athletic office.
All spectators will be required to wear a face covering for admittance and will be asked to sit in the upstairs bleachers and respect social distancing.

Girls cross country

The LaPorte Girls Cross Country team put together another solid team effort Saturday, leading to a 4th place team finish and punch their ticket to next week’s New Prairie Semistate. Senior Ella Bensz continued to lead the Slicers with a 4th place individual finish with a time of 19:19. Also earning All-Regional Honors was sophomore Brenna Sobecki, who earned a 14th place finish with a time of 20:01. Other Slicers scorers were juniors Ella Dubbs (29/20:51), Lilly Burke (39/21:36), and Peyton Willoughby (43/21:52).

Boys cross country

The LaPorte Boys Cross Country team continued to keep the ball rolling with a second place finish at the Chesterton Regionals at Sunset Hills Saturday. In continuing his dominant season, Junior Cole Raymond won the individual title; leading wire to wire with a time of 16:17. Also earning All-Regional Honors with top 20 finishes was senior Sam Bell’s 7th place finish of 16:44 and Jay Pillai’s 17th place time of 17:13. Finishing out the scoring for the Slicers were sophomores Stevie Klimczak (35/17:45) and Tyler Troy 940/17:50). This performance has earned the Slicers a trip to compete in the IHSAA New Prairie Semistate next Saturday.

Girls varsity volleyball

Varsity volleyball beat Plymouth High School 3-0 Saturday night for the sectional championship. Earlier that day, the Slicers beat Mishawaka 3-0 Saturday morning to advance to the sectional.

Varsity football

LaPorte High School Varsity Football fell to Portage High School 34-28 Friday night.
Tough overtime loss on the road to end the regular season.

 

NEW PRAIRIE HIGH SCHOOL

Girls cross country

The Lady Cougars advanced 6 individuals to the Chesterton Regional Saturday morning. Sophomore Lillian Zelasko finished 3rd, earning the first individual spot to advance to next weekend’s Semi-State at New Prairie. Also competing in this morning’s Regional were Brianna Hooton, Holly Wykoff, Ilayna Baltes, Audrey Henning, and Alexis Lichtenbarger. Brianna Hooton was one place shy of advancing. Catch Lilly racing next weekend at home as she works to earn a spot at the State Meet.

Boys cross country 

The New Prairie boys cross country team advanced to next week’s semi-state race by placing 5th at Saturday’s regional race.

Conditions were chilly and windy at the course in Chesterton. Josh Baltes had a great performance by placing 3rd in 16:32. Ethan Walden followed in 27th in 17:31. Brenden Oden placed 34th in 17:39, Alex Cicero 38th in 17:48, and Dan Reshan 39th in 17:50 to complete the scoring for the squad. Tristan Balmer lost his shoe early in the race, and finished 41st in 17:52. Dan O’Laughlin finished 46th in 18:04.

New Prairie will compete at the New Prairie Semi-State on Saturday, October 24th.

Girls varsity volleyball

The Cougars earn their third straight sectional title Saturday night, beating John Glenn 3-0. Emma Fleck lead with 4 aces followed by Ellie Michiaels with 3. Haley Robinson had 15 kills while Elise Swistek chipped in 10 and Ellie Michiaels (7). Fleck dished out 33 assists and Josie Troy had 18 digs.
The Cougars started their Saturday play with a win over South Bend St. Joe. Emma Fleck lead with 5 aces and was crucial to keeping the opponent out of system. Elise Swistek had 16 kills, Ellie Michiaels (6) and Haley Robinson (5). Swistek also lead with 4 blocks followed by Robinson with 3. Fleck dished out 25 assists and libero Josie Troy had 20 digs.

Varsity football

New Prairie High School varsity football fell to Elkhart 28-7 Friday night. Elkhart quarterback Cameron Wiltfong completed 25 passes for 383 yards, but 3 New Prairie interceptions enabled the Cougars to stay close until the end of the game in a 28 – 7 Lion victory. Sophomore Tayvion Ortman, junior Ben Fronk, and sophomore Kole Staley made the interceptions.
Senior Bobby Siford led Cougar rushers with 100 yards in 21 carries. Senior Ian Skornog scored the Cougar touchdown with a 1 yard run. Senior Zane Gazarkiewicz made 3 receptions for 36 yards. Siford and senior Koley Weinberg led New Prairie tacklers with 12 each.
