Richard A. “Dick” Shail, 82, of La Porte, Ind. passed away Tuesday, Oct. 20, 2020 at Hamilton Grove Living and Care Options, New Carlisle, Ind.

He was born Sept. 3, 1938 in La Porte to Carl Shail and Bonnie (Bunton) Shail.

Dick attended school in La Porte. He joined the Navy in 1955, serving on the USS Haynsworth,  and was honorably discharged in 1959. After his tour in the Navy, Dick returned to La Porte and on April 4, 1959 he married first wife Betty Nekvasil; they became the proud parents of two sons, Richard and Robert Shail. Betty passed away in 1992 and on Aug. 10, 1996 Dick married his devoted wife of 24 years, Joan (Cook) Benson.

He retired from Jefferson Smurfit (Boise Cascade), La Porte, after 30 years of service.

Dick enjoyed watching TV with his wife Joanie, especially westerns and game shows. They truly enjoyed traveling to reunions of the USS Haynsworth until Dick’s health would no longer allow. He was a proud member of PRCU and PNA, of La Porte and the Fish Lake American Legion Post 400.

Survivors include his wife, Joanie; sons, Rich (Nancy) and Rob (Marla) Shail, of New Carlisle; step-children, Brenda (Rick) Masters of Frankfort, Ind. and Charlie (Mary) Benson of Indianapolis, Ind.; grandchildren, Nathan (Katelynn) and Kortney Shail, and Seth (Abbie) and Noah Shail; step-grandchildren, Thomas and Colin Benson and James (Alicia) Pearish; three step-great-grandchildren; and brother Ron (Sherry) Shail of La Porte.

In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Pat Ivey and Shirley Eigenmann.

He will be laid to rest at Patton Cemetery, La Porte, on Oct. 23. Due to COVID-19 concerns, a private family burial is planned.

Contributions in his memory can be made to the PRCU, 620 Bach St. La Porte, Ind. 46350, where he had been a member for over 50 years.

Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 602 Maple Ave., La Porte, is handling the arrangements.
