La Porte man arrested for OWI after rear-ending La Porte woman’s car, causing injury

A La Porte man was arrested Dec. 3 for operating while intoxicated with prior conviction after his vehicle rear-ended another on Ind. 2 at Fail Road.

According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, Kiven Francis, 57, was driving west on Ind. 2 at about 3:50 p.m. when his 2001 Ford struck a 2021 Lincoln driven by Bertina Sleppy, 56, of La Porte. Sleppy’s car was stopped at the stoplight in the westbound lane.

A front-seat passenger in Sleppy’s car, Joe Sleppy, 66, was injured and taken to the hospital.

Francis told responding Deputy Jacob Payne that he didn’t see the other vehicle because of glare from the sun. Payne conducted an OWI investigation on Francis and took him to La Porte County Jail, where he was being held on a $1,055 cash-only bond. The charge is a Level 6 felony.
