Moments in time … in photographs

This Hall’s Opera House poster advertises the performance of Charles Erin, one night only, on Saturday, Jan. 26, 1889. Hall’s Opera House was located at 711-713 Madison St., La Porte, behind the current Louie’s Restaurant. It was built in 1881 by Albert Hall and was later managed by his son, Wilbur J. Hall. It burned down in 1965 in the P.W. Way fire.

J. Frank Tilden, pictured with hounds, was elected sheriff of La Porte County in 1910 and 1912 and was later appointed Chief of Police for La Porte by Mayor A.J. Miller in 1930. He also worked as a farmer and, later in life, as an elevator operator at the First National Bank Building. He died in 1946.

The Ten Millionth Ford is shown here on a visit to La Porte. It was manufactured on June 14, 1924, and was a Model T. In the background is the Monroe Hotel to the left and the Carlbeck Hotel to the right.
