Moments in Time … in photographs

This La Porte County Jail in La Porte, pictured here, was built in 1857. The sheriff’s house was in front and the cell block was in the back. This jail was replaced in 1908, and replaced again in 1977 by the current jail.

John Barker of Michigan City was co-owner with Mr. Haskell and Mr. Aldridge of the Haskell Barker Car Company, founded in 1852. Haskell Barker later became Pullman Standard. By 1908, the firm employed 3,500 men. Pullman Standard closed in 1970. A fire destroyed all but three buildings in 1973. Barker’s home, the Barker Mansion in Michigan City, is now a museum.

Big Island School students and teacher Amelia Gloor are photographed here. Please contact the museum if you know any student names. Big Island School existed in the 1890s in Union Township in the southeast portion of La Porte County. In 1892 enrollment was 10, and by 1899, attendance had grown to 87.
