Moments in Time … in photographs

This photo shows the Interlaken School (left) on Pine Lake Avenue with its log cabin gymnasium. The school building still stands at 431 Pine Lake Ave. but the log cabin gave way to an empty lot, which is now the location of a Dollar General.

Clifford Burg, age 5, with his pony and buggy in front of his home at 708 Detroit St., La Porte, in 1890.

The new St. Anthony Hospital addition was dedicated in 1967. The original St. Anthony Hospital building can be seen in the right rear of the photo. This location was closed when the new hospital, Franciscan Health, opened in Michigan City in 2019.

The Interlaken School building eventually became an apartment building that my great-grandparents owned and has most recently been a shop called “The Goods.” Before the Dollar General, the space the log cabin occupied was a gas station and general store run by Fred and Josephine Drogosz. Fred had a large garage toward the back of the property that was built around a large field stone hearth. The hearth was left over from the the academy. The buildings on the property were torn down and the land left vacant some time around the early 2000’s, shortly before Pine Lake Ave. was widened.
