Joseph “Joe” Hodum, 1945-2021


Joseph “Joe” Hodum, 75, of Michigan City, Ind., passed away peacefully at 12:58 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 27, 2021, in his home surrounded by his family.

He was born Dec. 22, 1945, in Corinth, Miss., to Epp and Tommie Lee (Childs) Hodum.

Joe grew up in Corinth, where he met Regina Elaine Eaton. They were married Nov. 19, 1966. Joe and Regina moved to northwest Indiana, where they raised four boys together. Joe worked as a Union Ironworker for Local 395 and Local 1 for over 45 years.

Joe was passionate about many things. He was serious about his relationship with Jesus Christ and was very active in the work of the church for many years. He worked overtime and sacrificed much to help finance the work of the local church and overseas missionary work. Joe was not afraid of hard work. There was no job that was intimidating to him. He was a planner, designer, fabricator and supervisor.

Joe had a love for the outdoors and gardening. He loved delivering bags of tomatoes and peppers to those he loved. Some of his favorite things to do included spending time with his family, driving to Mississippi to spend time with his brothers and sisters, and vacationing in the Smoky Mountains.

Joe is survived by his wife, Regina Hodum of Michigan City; four sons, Timothy Joe (Rachel) Hodum of La Porte, Ind., Anthony Coe (Lisa) Hodum of Kingsford Heights, Ind., Nathan Eric (Chris) Hodum of La Porte and Lorne Van (Sarah) Hodum of Michigan City; three brothers, Robert Ethan Hodum, Gary Manuel (Wanda) Hodum and Thomas Dwight Hodum; two sisters, Phyllis Imogene (Larry) Clemmons and Agnes Loraine (Bill) Austin;  six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Berl Lathaniel Hodum, William Lacy Hodum and Arnold Ray Hodum; and one sister, Berchie Lee Haycock.

A funeral celebrating his life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at Lakeview Christian Center, Michigan City, with Pastor Lorne Hodum officiating. Visitation and viewing will be held from 11 a.m. until the service at the church. A private burial will take place at Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte. Lakeview Funeral Home and Crematory, La Porte, is handling arrangements.

    I worked around Construction Projects with Joe I the late 1985s & 1990s and was always Glad to see Joe & work around him. He was alway a wonderful Man and I liked and Respected him very much.
