LP County Boys & Girls Clubs resume after-school programs thanks to countywide support

Press release and photos provided

Boys & Girls Clubs of La Porte County are officially back to after school! After  months of adjusting to changing schedules and operating with extended hours during periods of online learning, club members and staff are happily settling into their new routines.

The clubs offer services for kids at Pine Elementary School, Springfield Elementary School and the Charles R. Westcott Club, all in Michigan City. All clubs operate from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily and provide programming that supports academic success, character and citizenship, and healthy lifestyles.

“Reduced COVID-19 risk levels have made it possible for our friends at Michigan City Area  Schools to resume in-person learning, and for us to return to many of the traditional after-school  programs that our club members and staff enjoy,” said Michelle Shirk, clubs CEO. “As we move into this next phase of serving kids and families, we feel overwhelmed with gratitude for the amazing community support that has allowed us to evolve as needed over the past year.”

All club services are offered completely free of charge. The organization relies on grant funding and annual campaign donations from individuals, businesses and foundations.

“We are so incredibly grateful to our community partners for their help and support through  these challenging times,” said David Gately, clubs board president. “As we look to the  future, we are also very encouraged at the possibility of growing these partnerships and  increasing our footprint to reach more youth in our county. This is truly an exciting time for  the Boys and Girls Clubs and for our kids!”
