County museum to reopen with regular hours April 6

The La Porte County Historical Society is proud to announce the reopening of its museum on Tuesday, April 6. Hours will return to Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Some new exhibits are on display, so regular and new visitors are encouraged to come and see them. New exhibits on the lower floor include the 4-H, Washington Park Zoo, and History of Computers exhibits. New cabinets from La Porte Hospital have been installed downstairs to exhibit hospital memorabilia. On the main floor, a display case now features toy trains. Downstairs, there is also the new W.A. Jones at Home exhibit. The gun collection housed at the museum was amassed by W.A. Jones. Now on display is the jacket Jones wore when hunting with President Theodore Roosevelt, and the upholstered wheelchair Jones used in his later years.

In the Fern Eddy Schultz Research Library is the new Dr. M. Barber Backer research/computer center. Dr. Backer’s scrapbooks, detailing La Porte’s medical history, will soon be housed in this area. The Fern Eddy Schultz Research Library will continue to be available on a reservation basis due to the pandemic. Please call 219-324-6767 to book your day in the library.

Mask wearing over the nose and mouth will still be required for all adults and children during your entire visit. Thank you in advance for keeping all visitors, staff and volunteers as safe as possible.

The museum is located in La Porte at 2405 Indiana Ave. If you have any questions, call us at 219-324-6767 or email mbarber@laportecountyhistory.org. You may also find information on the historical society and museum at La Porte County Historical Society | Facebook and laportecountyhistory.org
