La Porte County Health Department extends mask mandate, superseding governor’s relaxed advisory level

Just a day after Gov. Eric Holcomb relaxed the state’s mask mandate to an advisory, the La Porte County Health Department superseded his order and extended the county’s mask mandate through April.

The county mandate extension comes just a few days after its state color-coded status worsened from blue, the best status in terms of a low number of new COVID-19 cases, to yellow, a step worse in status level.

In Holcomb’s address on changed COVID-19 regulations March 31, he noted that “local governments, private businesses and other entities may institute more stringent guidelines” than the state’s.

Here are excerpts of the mask mandate extension issued April 1 by La Porte County Health Officer Dr. Sandra Deausy:

… Whereas, La Porte County now has a positivity rate of 6.49 percent, placing this county among the YELLOW category of counties, and …

Whereas I have consulted with a range of local elected officials including our county commissioners and the mayors of both the City of La Porte and City of Michigan City, and

Whereas the governor has given discretion to local health departments to take action as necessary to address this pandemic,

Now therefore pursuant to the authority vested in me by the laws of the State of Indiana, I hereby decree and order the following:

1. Face covering mandate. Every individual must properly wear a face covering over their nose and mouth when they are at:

   a. An indoor area open to the public, including public transportation;

   b. An outdoor public area where distance of 6 feet from individuals outside of their household cannot be maintained.

2. Social gatherings. Consistent with the governor’s color-coded metrics, counties designated as yellow, social gatherings and events are limited to a total of 100 persons (including staff). Social gatherings and events shall not exceed 50 percent of a facility’s capability.

3. Capacities.

   a. Indoor and outdoor capacity for bars, restaurants and entertainment venues are to be governed by CDC social distancing guidelines. Tables are to be placed a minimum of 6 feet apart, including booth tables.

   b. Gyms and fitness studios, including locker rooms, are subject to strict adherence to social distancing requirements.

   c. Libraries, funeral homes, swimming pools are also subject to social distancing requirements.

4. Business and employer requirements. (Orders that every employer require all employees to properly wear masks and that employers maintain social distancing and sanitary requirements.)

5. The intent of this order is to mandate all people in La Porte County, whether engaged in work activities, social activities or everyday activities, wear a face covering, as outlined herein, to prevent the spread of COVID-19 … . When applying this order, it is important to remember the following:

   a. Nothing in this order reduces or eliminates the requirements imposed by the executive orders of Gov. Holcomb or imposed by any directive or order from the governor or other regulatory local, state or federal agency.

   b. Actions that contradict this order do not create grounds for residents or law enforcement to stop, detain, issue citation, arrest, intimidate, or harass individuals who do not comply with this order. This order should be used to educate, encourage and persuade individuals to wear face coverings. …

Exemptions to the face covering mandate. The La Porte County Health Department strongly encourages those who are unable to wear a face covering to alternatively wear a face shield.

Seriously, Andrew? Why should we even listen to you when you obviously didn’t even read the thing? You need to spend about a month in WNLP jail for that. Get someone to help you read it. It specifically says, “Actions that contradict this order do not create grounds for residents or law enforcement to stop, detain, issue citation, arrest, intimidate, or harass individuals who do not comply with this order. This order should be used to educate, encourage and persuade individuals to wear face coverings.”

So very Glad Laporte is overriding the Governors request. Makes very good sense to do so. Now if only St.Joseph Couty would wake up.

From blue to yellow , this is smart. Let’s protect each other. If you don’t want to wear a mask that’s ok too just please stay your distance unless you’ve had the shots. We are all in this together.

What a bunch of crybabies here. For a year now I have yet to see a strict mask rule actually enforced anywhere in La Porte. Since the beginning of the pandemic, we’ve seen selfish and ignorant anti maskers at the grocery store, gas station, restaurants, etc., so instead of running to your computer to make idiotic threats about not wearing your mask, you can just you know, go about your life not wearing one like you have since last March. Nobody thinks your tough or smart, I’m fact it’s quite the opposite.

I don’t look at it as over riding the Governor, but doing as he stated that Local Officials must determine for themselves. I appreciate everything remaining the same for now since we are no longer a Blue County. It must be very difficult as an Official to help people when many don’t want to be helpful themselves. To move forward, we all must work together to help even if it is something we don’t like or want to do. What happened to co-operating and doing what makes sense for the whole. Doesn’t mean matters can’t be discussed or disagreed upon, but it does mean that you do something because it is the best solution for all at the time.

I am also satisfied that we’re keeping the mandate in LaPorte. Our local government is making data-based decisions. I’m more than happy to comply. There are still many locals who haven’t had the opportunity to be fully vaccinated (including teens and children), and they deserve our making a continued effort to fight the spread. Thank you to the decision makers and those doing their part to keep us all safer!

I am sick and tired of this mask crap. If I don’t want to wear one, I shouldn’t have to have anyone telling me I have to. I have had both Covid shots, by the way, and am safe.

So very sorry to hear that our County is allowing this bonehead decision to continue the ineffective mask mandate. No one should make this decision for us. If people want to wear a mask they can, to be mandated is wrong. Now even more useless masks can be found littering the ground everywhere, and in our oceans.

Listen, I get that littering is a problem but I do not think this is a valid argument to not wear a mask. There are plenty of reusable cloth options. Even the cheap ones are reusable to an extent. I do believe that single use plastics should be banned in most cases though, so let’s agree on that.

The mask mandate was supposed to only last a couple months about a year ago. There are people working at gas stations, grocery stores, retail environments that process hundreds of “contaminated” items, interact with hundreds of people a day and they are still alive. Let’s just continue to exercise social distance guide lines and should you feel more protected with a mask on, by all means, wear your mask!! Ray is a perfect example of how not to act towards others during these trying times. I see this mask mandate as a foolish waste of time and it has definitely run it’s course but I would NEVER call someone who wears a mask IGNORANT because they believe something different. People like Ray are a problem and will always try and bully the people who do not fall in line with his beliefs.

People who make the ignorant choice to not wear a mask and potentially save a life need to be called out. Despite different ‘beliefs’ there are still facts in this world.
