Weller Avenue will be closed from Pine Lake Avenue a few blocks west to Willow Street on Tuesday, April 6, so a logjam can be cleared from the Lily Lake channel that runs under Weller. The creek connects Lily to Stone and Pine lakes via wetlands and channels. Parents of Riley School children in particular should take note of this pending closure.

City Wastewater Superintendent Jerry Jackson said a backhoe will be brought in to clear the logs, dirt and debris. Mayor Tom Dermody said this is the first time in 25 years that such a blockage has occurred.

Weller should reopen Tuesday evening.

That “creek” is actually the Lily Lake Channel.

I remember as a kid a story of a train being at the bottom of Lily Lake. Was that just a myth?

Being raised on Weller Ave, I remember when you could go by boat all the way from Stone Lake to Lilly Lake under the road.

We used to do the same trip… from Pine Lake to the Weller bridge. We’d “beach” the boat behind Hickman’s/Hinton’s grocery, walk across Weller to McDonald’s.

That was adventurous back in the day!!

I, too, have heard the sunken train into a lake with no bottom story. Makes the history of La Porte interesting!

Looks like that bridge it’s self could use some tlc.Wonder if it’s ever been inspected.
