2 face drug charges after traffic stop on U.S. 30

On April 6, 2021, at 1:45 a.m., Deputy Michael Sweet was stopped at the intersection of U.S. 30 and Old U.S. 30. After a westbound vehicle passed him, he observed an equipment violation (traffic infraction) on the rear of the vehicle.

Sweet initiated a traffic stop in the 6300 west block of U.S. 30.  The driver identified herself as Angela M. Gaines, 27, and the front-seat passenger identified himself as Paul L. Hargrove, 37, both from Ainsworth, Neb. Each had suspended driver’s licenses. Sweet also suspected criminal activity based on probable cause.

After Deputy Austin Howell arrived to assist, Gaines and Hargrove were removed from the vehicle. Sweet searched the car and found a plastic bag containing different types of pills, another plastic bag containing a white powdery substance, and additional bags containing marijuana.  Gaines and Hargrove were immediately taken into custody and taken to the La Porte County Jail.

Gaines was charged with possession of Cocaine or Narcotic Drug, Level 4 Felony; possession of Methamphetamine, Level 5 Felony; and possession of Marijuana, Class B-Misdemeanor.

 

Hargrove was charged with possession of Cocaine or Narcotic Drug, Level 3 Felony; possession of Methamphetamine, Level 4 Felony; and possession of Marijuana, Level 6 Felony.

 

Gaines was being held on a $20,00o cash-only bond. Hargrove was being held on a $25,000 cash-only bond.

    both in same car-both have suspended license-both with same drugs. what’s the difference in the charges?-like marijuana misdemeanor for woman but felony for the guy. and 5 k different on bond. just curious.

      I immediately wondered the same thing lawman…not to mention, she was the one driving. Seems a bit skewed to me also! :/
