Councilman demands that Stabosz stop “incessant, unfounded personal attacks” on fellow county officials

Press release submitted by La Porte County Councilman Mark Yagelski

Yagelski

La Porte County Council Vice President Mark Yagelski, the longest serving elected county official who was key in creating the county’s Office of Economic Development. has demanded that newly elected County Auditor Tim Stabosz “immediately stop these incessant, unfounded personal attacks on the integrity of our county attorney and two of our county commissioners,” saying this “nonsense is hurting our county’s reputation with business prospects and job creation activities.”

In a press release, Yagelski said “business craves a safe, stable investment environment where county leadership is working in tandem and is unified. Instead, Auditor Stabosz has made ridiculous claims from the moment he was sworn in about ‘corruption,’ the county’s ‘operating authority being completely rotten’ and a  ‘culture of fear, terror and duress.’  “Stabosz actually put out an Op/Ed on April 6 claiming the commissioners have surrendered their ‘moral authority’ and that county government is ‘an authoritarian structure reminiscent of Soviet Russia.’” Yagelski said.

“Our new auditor is either reading too many Marvel comic books or spending too much time on video games as he comes up with these dramatic, ridiculous, over-the-top depictions of county government,” Yagelski said. “It’s time he put up or shut up. I say again to him – if you have any evidence of wrongdoing, take it to the state police, the county prosecutor or FBI Public Integrity Unit.  Otherwise, shut up and do the job the taxpayers elected you to do.”

The four-term 3rd District councilman said that “site selectors for business prospects search carefully to see if a county’s leadership is unified and is not embroiled in  controversy. We’ve made great strides in recent years with economic development efforts and this nonsense threatens to derail that. For instance, we are in the finals of site selection for a big, vertical farming operation that would mean 176 jobs paying an average wage of $35,000. Rather than helping us, the auditor hurts our efforts with site selectors with these ridiculous, unfounded attacks claiming ‘corruption’ and ‘moral abdication’ by county officials.

“I’m lobbying for federal money for the Franklin Street bridge and what I’ve heard from federal officials is ‘what in the world is going on in your county with this auditor?  I want the auditor to stop this nonsense NOW!” Yagelski said.

“Also lobbying the Statehouse in Indianapolis, they’re asking the same questions. Remember the South Shore Double Track project? This became a model for the State of Indiana and the country on how to ask for and receive funding for this project. The key to this project was the three counties working hand in hand in the spirit of cooperation.

“It is now time for La Porte County officials to step up and work hand in hand with the spirit of cooperation so we don’t lose out on are fair share of money!”

Oh, fer heaven’s sakes, Tim, quit with the sniping already and just do your darned job and learn to get along and play nicely in the sandbox with the others. You continue to be very childish, spouting tantrums every now and then.

Of course the people that are part of the problem want the people pointing it out to stop. LaPorte has had serious ethical issues for decades and up until now no one with any power has bothered to stand up to them. Anyone whos tried doing business with our city or county government has experienced it first hand.

COUNCILMAN I HOPE OTHERS SPEAK OUT AS YOU HAVE. WHEN Stabosz was in Laporte city government he made a habit of attacking and being rude to Mayor Milo..His behavior is hurting us all. HE has never worked well with others.

I totally agree. This must end because it is damaging to the County and will only result in loss of interest in businesses in locating in our County. Public servants are here to serve the people; not any self-interests or personal vendettas. So, with that said, the County Auditor needs to pick up his pencil and start figuring things out before the public opinion makes plans to erase him from his job.

Kudos to Councilman Yagelski for calling this out. Stabosz was a problem on the LaPorte City Council (which caused him not to get re-elected) and has been an issue ever since getting elected to county government. “…if you have any evidence of wrongdoing, take it to the state police, the county prosecutor, or FBI Public Integrity Unit.” Indeed. It’s become clear that this is just partisan hackery.

I’ve found it interesting that Auditor Stabosz and Commissioner Haney continue to say that people were intimidated by the attorney or others in the county government. Yet, these same people (like Joie Winski) say they were not intimidated. There’s clearly a partisan narrative trying to get created that doesn’t match up with the facts. It seems the tactic employed is if you say it enough, hopefully, people will start believing it.

Mr. Stabosz and Mr. Haney, please leave your petty partisan fighting to the Trump’s of this world and start serving LaPorte County people by working together with Republicans and Democrats alike. Start loving your community more than you love your political party (or hate the other party.) As Councilman Yagelski mentions, people ARE noticing, and it’s not a great look for us. We are better together.

TIM if you know something bad is going on why do you not report it ? You are making our county become a joke. Do your job and work together or resign. Other wise if you do not have nothing nice to say do not say it at all.

It’s time for the mediocre men to stop winning elections. There are so many overachieving, capable and thoughtful women in the city/county who could run circles around this clown. Ladies, if you show up to run, we men will vote for you.

This guy has a habit of even telling the voters of this very county: “the electorate is plain stupid.” Those were his exact words I can hear echoing back about 10 years ago when he lost very badly. Then even attacked fellow republicans in public, AND private about how he is always right and they are always wrong. He has never earned an honest living and is a person who constantly produces division.

Tim, either put up or shut up. Either report your concerns as crimes or shut up and do the job to which you were elected. This constant divisiveness of yours does no good to anybody and creates conflict within the office. I’ll bet your office has many workers who are unhappy with their jobs because you can’t get along with anybody.

What’s the point of seeking office as a Republican these days if you’re not going to act like the Big Orange Blob? Those Mar-a-Lago invites are tough to come by behaving like an adult.

Tim Stabosz strikes me as an extremist of the Trump/MAGA/QAnon vein. Yagelski’s summary here strengthens my first impression of Stobosz.

Apparently, Stabosz expects to unseat someone by hook or crook. I strongly agree with Yagelski and several other commenters here. Stabosz should put up or shut up.

Stabosz’s efforts here remind me of the Failed Coup of January 6 in DC. He makes alarming allegations supported by … um … alarming allegations. But at least he hasn’t yet rallied a crowd of armed protestors to storm our Court House. Yeah, THAT would stain the County’s reputation big-time, just as Yagelski dreads.

So Stabosz: we’re calling your bluff.

And Republicans who actually want better governance: where are you? Your guy Stabosz is stinkin’ up the joint.

Republicans should be ashamed of themselves and their immature behavior. Donald Trumps immature childish behavior open the doors for all these others to throw out any sense of morality and decency.
