Dunebrook receives $5,000 donation from Horizon Bank

Horizon Bank has donated $5,000 to Dunebrook, Inc., for use toward child abuse prevention education in La Porte and Porter counties.

Dunebrook’s programs aim to reduce the occurrence of child sexual abuse in children and adolescents. The objectives are to educate children to build self-protection knowledge and skills and to help them avoid unsafe situations as well as empower them to report incidences of sexual abuse. Programs also play a key part in educating adults in how to prevent, identify and respond to suspicions of child sexual abuse. Last year, Dunebrook presented to nearly 40,000 students in 55 schools across La Porte, Porter and Starke counties.

“April is Child Abuse Prevention Awareness month and we are taking this time to educate the community on child abuse prevention,” said Lisa Scheller, director of development at Dunebrook. “We are so very thankful to Horizon Bank for this grant for Dunebrook’s public education program. The presentations are arranged in collaboration with schools and meet the state’s requirements for schools to provide this critical safety education annually to students in grades K-12. The Body Safety programs have been presented via a mix of in-person, online and hybrid methods. Thank you Horizon Bank for strengthening children, families and our community.”

Dunebrook’s mission is to help parents build healthier, happier families. Its fully trained staff provides guidance, encouragement and education in the home. Parents learn how to build confidence and competence as they are assisted with basic family needs, learn positive interactions with their children, and gain better understanding of what to expect in their children’s growth, development and life coping skills.
