One dead, one wounded after Michigan City drive-by shooting

 

A 21-year-old Michigan City man died after a drive-by shooting Thursday, May 20, 2021, on North Calumet Avenue in Michigan City. Another man was wounded.

Tyrese Morris-Cross died at South Bend Memorial Hospital. He had been flown there after initially being taken to Franciscan Health.

Another man, age 23, was wounded and taken to Franciscan. Michigan City Police did not release his name but said he is in stable condition at Franciscan and his injuries are not life-threatening.

The shootings occurred at about 1:30 p.m. in the 200 block of North Calumet, police said. Both men were outside a house there when an SUV rolled past and someone inside fired toward the two multiple times. The SUV then sped away.

Police collected evidence and are interviewing witnesses. No arrests have been made so far.
Chief Dion Campbell said, “I applaud the efforts of our department in investigating this homicide. Our supervisors and officers showed great leadership and poise during a senseless act that occurred in broad daylight. This ‘No Snitch Culture’ has to stop. On the heels of a town hall meeting designed to find solutions, this incident is disheartening to say the least. Our condolences to the family of the deceased. These acts leave lifelong scars and disruptions in families and it has to stop. I meet weekly with the mayor to discuss these issues our city is facing. It will take a community effort to stop this cycle of senseless violence.”

Other first responders involved were Officer Adam Brinkman, Officer Al Schutz, Officer Andy Paull, Sgt. Jeff Piotrowski, Sgt, Willie Henderson, Lt. Jeff Ramion, the Investigative Division, La Porte County Drug Task Force, La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, Trail Creek Police, Long Beach Police, Michigan City Fire Department, and LaPorte County EMS.

    I was in a drive by in LaPorte . This town is not special .
