Livestock removed before fire engulfs barn in Scipio Township

Fire destroyed a large barn at the Minich farm in the 4200S block of CR-435W Wednesday, June 9. The barn contained livestock but people at the farm were able to get all the animals out without injury before the fire engulfed the structure.

Scipio Township Fire Department, the initial responder, was called out shortly after 8 a.m. and didn’t leave the property until Wednesday night. Noble, Center and Pleasant townships and Kingsbury and Westville fire departments were soon called in to assist. La Porte County EMS and La Porte County Hazmat also responded.

Several firefighters were treated at a hospital and at the scene for heat issues.
