Velma Duensing, 1929-2021

 

Velma Duensing, 91, of La Porte, Ind., passed away Monday, June 7, 2021, at the home of her daughter in Rolling Prairie, Ind., surrounded by her family. 

She was born July 11, 1929, in La Porte, the daughter of Chester and Dolma (Jensen) Goble.

A lifelong resident of the area, Velma worked as a machine operator at both American Home Foods and Howmet for several years. She attended Faith Baptist Church in La Porte as well as the VFW in South Bend with her late husband. Velma loved to dance and you would often see her and Max kicking their heels up around town. Velma enjoyed fishing and learned to play the banjo, which she shared with her musical family whom she loved dearly.

On Jan. 31, 1948, in Columbus, Ind., Velma married Max Duensing, Sr., who preceded her in death in 2011.

She was also preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Connie Dunning; son, Larry Duensing; brothers, Kenneth, Chester, Roger “Dean” and Donald Goble; sisters, Nancy Thompson, Betty Nordstrom, Mary Lou Mullins and Shirley Wilson; grandson, Chad Dunning; and great-great-grandson, Lincoln.

Velma is survived by her daughter, Alta Rae “Addie” (Gerry) Zuzock of Rolling Prairie; son, Max Duensing, Jr., of La Porte; three sisters, Judy Thompson of Hamlet, Ind., Ruth Kroa of Knox, Ind., and Jane (Tony) Stanford of Hamlet; three brothers, Gene (Joanne) Goble of Hamlet, Dennis Goble of Hamlet and Dale Goble of Knox; 7 grandchildren, Leslie Duensing, Jimmy (Dee) Dunning, Shannon (Donna) Duensing, Gina Garcia, Amy (Floyd) Thomas, Jodie (Jerry) Novak, and Ryan Duensing; 13 great-grandchildren, Andrew (Brittney), Lane, Dalton, Paz III, Isabella, Natalia, Dani, Zach, Lauren, Levi, Elliana, Jonah, Skyler, and Elaine; great-great-grandchildren, Aiden, Liam, Silas, Mia, Ezekial, Nolan, Marshall, Lexi, Jeremiah, and Nevaeh; and a large extended family.

The family will receive friends at Haverstock Funeral Home and Cremation Services, La Porte, on Monday, June 14, from 4 to 7 p.m. and Tuesday, June 15, from 10 to 11 a.m. A celebration of her life will take place at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Pastor Eddie Heavener officiating. Interment next to her husband, Max, will follow at Pine Lake Cemetery, La Porte.
