La Porte County Small Animal Shelter shares a bittersweet story

WNLP editor’s note: While many of the La Porte County Small Animal Shelter’s stories have happy endings, others are tragic, and yet others are a bit of both, such as this one shared June 24 by the shelter:

“This precious soul came to us as a stray May 2, scarred, ill, malnourished, and possibly the sweetest, most loving dog to end up here in a long time. She became our office dog and even had some field trips home with the director, Eric. All she wanted was to be near someone and be loved, and for 7 1/2 weeks, she was loved. Nothing the vet could do was going to cure her health problems and last week we discovered she was loaded with cancer. Today she had chicken nuggets and a cheeseburger for lunch and then we held her head, kissed her one last time, told her she was a good dog, and said goodbye. Rest easy, sweet Lauralei. No more pain.”

Oh, I am so horrendously sorry!! At least she was well cared for and loved in her last weeks. Thank you.

😔 So glad she had happy final weeks. I wonder where she was all of the other days of her life.

It doesn’t take a long time to fall in love with an animal. They become much more than “pets” as ours have always become family quickly.

What this poor poochie went through and yet, be lucky enough to receive the care of such loving people! Kudos for the 7-1/2 weeks your group provided to make her last weeks and days better for her!

    YOU PEOPLE ROCK!

Thanks for giving the sweet girl the time and love she needed. The result is of course, so sad, but the care given to her is amazing.
