Michigan City man charged in July 13 shootings that killed 1

A Michigan City man has been charged in the shooting of two men, one of whom died, July 13, 2021, in a Michigan City neighborhood, and police say he might have shot more people if not quickly apprehended.

Joshua Cornelison, 37, was apprehended by Michigan City Police the same night as the shootings and is now charged with felony murder; attempted murder, Level 1 Felony; burglary, Level 2 Felony; theft, Level 6 Felony; and criminal mischief, Level A Misdemeanor. Cornelison is being held without bond at La Porte County Jail.

At about 9:20 p.m. July 13, officers responded to the 1100 block of Buffalo Street and found Aaron Luncsford, 39, lying on the floor with a severe head injury. He was transported by La Porte County EMS to Franciscan Health, where he was pronounced dead.

About 40 minutes later police responded to the 100 block of West Homer Street and found a 43-year-old person who had been shot in the neck. The person was transported to Franciscan, then transferred to South Bend Memorial in critical condition. He is now in stable condition, according to a July 19 MCPD press release.

MCPD Chief Dion Campbell said, “This particular case was highly disturbing on so many levels. We are  very appreciative of the hard work and quick apprehension of the suspect who could have killed additional people if not identified, located and arrested. The arrest undoubtedly saved additional lives. It is evident that multiple isolated incidents of good police work by our department contributed to stopping this man from additional heinous acts. The Detective Bureau and the Patrol Division are to be commended for their actions.”

Anyone with further information about the shootings is asked to contact Detective/Corporal Kay Pliske at 219-874-3221, Ext. 1086, or kpliske@emichigancity.com.

Other first responders who assisted with these incidents were La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, Trail Creek Police, Michigan City Fire Department and La Porte County EMS.

This was my mom’s lawn guy, it is a miracle that no one else was hurt. My mom is 84 years old, I thank God that she was not harmed, or worse. Please do background checks on anyone that is going to do any kind of work at your home.
