New state system helps teens get jobs faster

Press release from State Rep. Jim Pressel, R-Rolling Prairie

For many Hoosier teenagers, having a job is important – especially over the summer. But starting a new job can take some time as they wait on work permits from their schools.

To simplify and speed up the process for both teens and employers, Indiana businesses must now register employees under the age of 18 using the Indiana Department of Labor’s new online database, the Youth Employment System, or YES. By eliminating the school-issued work permit, employers can fill much-needed positions and youths can start earning money much sooner.

Employers can learn more about YES and set up an account at DOL: Youth Employment Home (in.gov). The user-friendly database can be accessed from smartphones or computers, and used to submit needed information about employed minors.
