LP schools change mask, other guidelines after 400-plus quarantine cases

Press release from La Porte Community School Corporation

Recently, an executive order signed by Governor Holcomb (21-24) and new quarantine guidelines released by the Indiana Department of Health changed the requirements for close contact quarantines in schools.

The updated guidelines indicate that in schools where a face covering requirement has been adopted, any close contacts of a COVID-19 positive individual will not need to quarantine unless they develop symptoms.  The positive individual will still isolate, and close contacts will monitor themselves for symptoms for 14 days while they continue to attend school.

Therefore, the following revisions have been approved and updated on the La Porte Community School Corporation COVID-19 Intervention Plan:

  1. Effective Wednesday, Sept., 15, 2021, LPCSC will require face coverings during school hours in all LPCSC buildings in situations where six feet of social distancing cannot be maintained. This requirement will remain in effect at any time in which the La Porte County COVID-19 Advisory level is Yellow, Orange, or Red.
  2. LPCSC will continue to close-contact trace all positive COVID-19 cases for students and staff. Parents of students identified as being close contacts will be notified and provided the choice for their children to continue in-person instruction as long as they remain asymptomatic.
  3. LPCSC administration will continue to monitor data on student and staff positive cases by classroom, school, and department.  When positive case numbers rise to a level of concern, interventions will be determined an individual basis. Overall school numbers of 5% positive cases at a specific snapshot in time will be cause for contacting the health department and deciding upon any necessary interventions.

Since the start of the school year, we have had to quarantine over 400 healthy students due to close-contact tracing. This change will significantly lower our number of quarantined students, aligning with the LPCSC focus of avoiding disruptions of the educational process by keeping healthy students in the classroom with their teachers and peers.

It would be interesting to compare the numbers between Michigan CITY and Laporte. Michigan CITY mandated masks from the start 0f school. You can’t keep everyone happy, but you can keep everyone healthy.

I have been thanking my lucky stars that my kids are grown and I don’t have to deal with the school thing anymore. That being said, wear a mask if you have to, or want to, get the jab – or not, but people need to stop being so nasty to one another about something that is out of your control. Covid is terrible, and the schools are just trying to do what they think is best for all, but when did society become so hateful? This is not what I would want my child remembering from their school years. Good luck to all!

LPCSC shouldn’t have even let kids go to school without the mask mandate. My daughter goes to LPMS and the kids are staying socially distanced and the every class sanitizing desks isn’t getting done. That is a failure on the school boards part. It shouldn’t take that many kids and staff to be out before making a better decision.

LPCSC needs to catch up as MS school system is doing a better job and they are our neighbors.

I’m just going to pull my kids out of school. These masks are destroying society and that’s the way it was intended. You mask freaks make me sick. You’re ruining this country and starting with our youth. We’re about to celebrate year 2 of “15 days to flatten the curve”. Nothing will change. You’re just sheep.

How are masks ruining society? People are dying. 1 in every 500 U.S. citizens have now lost their lives to Covid.

Everybody is in an uproar about school guidance on this but nobody says a word about festivals and fox park concerts we as grown adults can’t even be controlled. We as humans made our own bed with this. Pro mask. Anti mask. Political take over. Arguing scientists. Believe or don’t believe. Obey or don’t obey. It all comes down to choice. Everybody should just worry about themselves and shut their proverbial pie holes.
