A refrigerated semi trailer containing food, including thousands of tortillas, caught fire on the toll road near Westville Wednesday night, causing a lot of work for firefighters and a big mess to clean up. No injuries were reported.

The fire, which occurred at about 10:30 p.m. at the 40.5-mile marker, required the work of numerous departments – including Coolspring, Westville, Center and Springfield from La Porte County and Liberty and Washington Township from Porter County – to contain. The firefighters used an estimated 15,000 gallons of water.

The toll road’s eastbound lanes were closed for almost five hours, according to Coolspring Assistant Chief Warren Smith.
