Boyd announces changes among personnel



Sheriff John Boyd has announced several personnel changes within the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office.

Joe Pavolka was hired in March of 1977. In 2011, he retired from the Merit Division with the rank of captain and moved to the Civil Division. Joe remained in the Civil Division for 10 years, serving civil papers until Friday.

Boyd said, “Forty-four years in this profession is quite an accomplishment and represents the countless sacrifices that Joe and his family made over the decades. We are grateful for his service and wish him the best of luck.”


Tony Wallace was hired in May of 1991. He worked his final shift with the Merit Division Sept. 30 and retired with the rank of sergeant. He immediately moved to the Civil Division, where he will continue his employment by serving civil papers.

Boyd said, “I publicly congratulate Tony on his retirement as a merit deputy. We are thankful he has chosen to remain with the office as he offers a vast amount of knowledge and experience.”

James Lear was hired in April of 2014. After spending two years in the Patrol Division, he transferred to the Criminal Investigations


Division (CID) in April of 2016. For five-plus years, James has worked as a detective where he conducted major felony investigations. James has been promoted to the rank of sergeant and has been transferred from CID to the Patrol Division, where he will begin serving as a supervisor on the day shift.

Austin Howell was hired in May of 2019. Following his graduation from the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy, he has served in the Patrol Division. Also effective now, Austin has been


transferred to CID. Detective Howell will conduct major felony investigations, specifically property and fraud-related crimes.

Boyd stated, “Congratulations to Sergeant Lear on his promotion and to Deputy Howell on his new assignment. These gentlemen are rising leaders within the office and have a very bright future ahead of them. I look forward to the service they will continue to provide the citizens of La Porte County for years to come.”
