New Prairie boys soccer team advances in sectionals

The New Prairie boys soccer team got its first-ever win at sectionals Monday, beating River Forest, 9-0.

The game was controlled from the opening whistle by New Prairie, with Corbin Jonas opening the scoring 2 minutes and 20 seconds into the game with a beautiful 25-yard volley into the corner of the goal. NP continued to push the pace, holding the ball on the opposing team’s side of the field and not allowing a single shot the entire first half of the game.

New Prairie poured on the pressure, scoring in the 8th, 11th, 14th, 20th, and 32nd minutes. Owen Chalik scored 2 goals, including a PK that he earned when he was dragged down by the keeper in the penalty area. Corbin Jonas netted another goal off of a hard knuckleball that the keeper was unable to control, and Brody Kress rounded out the scoring in the first half with 2 goals.

The 2nd half was much the same as the first, with Isaiah Morales scoring 1, Brian Parras scoring 1 and Jordan Vesper finishing off the scoring to end the game. Assists were made by Corbin Jonas (3), Neil Johnson (2), and Owen Chalik (1). Trent Platz and the New Prairie defense recorded 5th shutout of the season.

New Prairie will next play Wednesday, Oct. 6, against the winner of Hanover Central and Griffith at 5 p.m. at Wheeler High School.
