Barbara Smith, 1931-2021


Barbara Rose (Povlock) Smith, 90, of La Porte, Ind., went home to heaven Thursday, Oct. 7, 2021, in her home.

She was born Sept. 3, 1931, in La Porte to Raymond and Josephine (Peterson) Povlock.

Barbara graduated from Springfield Township High School in 1948.  She worked with her son, Al, at Maple City Sports for over 25 years. She enjoyed horse races and her weekly visits to Blue Chip. Barbara was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and served as a lunch lady for St. Joseph Catholic School.

On July 9, 1949, Barbara married the love of her life, Eugene Lee Smith, who preceded her in death on Dec. 23, 1998. Barbara and Eugene were married for 49 years.

She is survived by her children, Alan (Margaret) Smith of La Porte and Gary (Teri) Smith of La Porte: 4 grandchildren, Joey (Matt) Wiesner of La Porte, Jena (Anwar) Abdullah of Beaufort, S.C., Brian Smith of La Porte and Scott Galko of La Porte; great-grandchildren, Danielle Wiesner, Anwar Jr Abdullah, Faith Wiesner, Hannah Hawkins-Wiesner, Aydin Abdullah, Jayla Abdullah, Landen Nelson, Amani Abdullah, Grayson Galko, and Wyatt Galko; sister, Marie Gaddy of Kingsford Heights, Ind., and brother, Donald Povlock of Houston, Tex.

She was preceded in death by her daughter, Susan Smith, and siblings Jack Povlock, Anita Shimarek, Joan Koeppen and Dave Povlock.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, at Frank L. Keszei Funeral Home, Essling Chapel, La Porte. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 15, at St. Joseph Church, La Porte. Family and friends may gather at 9 a.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Patton Cemetery, La Porte.

Memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Parish, St. Joseph Church, 109 C St., La Porte, Ind. 46350.

    I am so sorry for your loss of such a wonderful woman.

    Al, Gary and family,

    Very sorry to hear about the passing of your mom. She must have touched a lot of people in her long life. She was a pistol and truly one of many “St. Joe moms” I remember from the neighborhood! God speed to you all.
