E-car crisis at Magna: Ineos halts development of electric off-road vehicle at Magna: 300 jobs at risk

In a company announcement in January, Ineos said development of an electric off-road vehicle was progressing with Magna, and that the vehicle would be manufactured at a plant in Graz. When asked, a Magna spokesperson confirmed at the time that the “Fusilier” was being developed in Graz in partnership with Ineos. However, the planned production of 30,000 to 50,000 units from 2027 was described as “speculative” earlier in the year and has not been confirmed by Magna. A request for Ineos was not answered.

Ineos is a young car brand from London, known for the “Grenadier” off-road vehicle. Founder Jim Radcliffe, who owns several soccer clubs and a third of the Mercedes Formula 1 racing team, presented the third model series from Ineos on Friday in London: the “Fusilier” aimed at offering first-class off-road capability without sacrifice. road comfort, and enables both zero-emission and low-emission drive options.

When Ratcliffe presented it, it was made clear that in addition to a fully battery-electric drive (BEV), a low-emission drive, electric range extender was also being developed. This option has a small petrol engine that runs a generator to charge the battery when there is no external charging option. Details of the alternative drive and timetable for market launch will be announced in autumn 2024.

As per the announcement, the vehicle will be manufactured in the Magna Cross. The new off-road vehicle is based on the “Grenadier”, but slightly shorter and lower. It is built on a special skateboard platform with a steel structure and aluminum doors and panels. “As part of the development process, the new Ineos Fusilier will undergo a rigorous testing program at Schöckl in Austria,” the company continued.
